A whole lot more than an office products store.
"Your Creative Stamping, Scrapbook & Hallmark Gift Store"

History
  • Roseburg Book Store changed to Roseburg Book & Stationery in the 1960s.
  • 1965 is when the store expanded from just the middle building to add the commercial side, it was 1970 when they expanded to the other side to add the Hallmark side. The middle building was originally the Post Office, and the Hallmark side was a Rexall Drug store.

Roseburg Book & Stationery opened its doors at 549 SE Jackson Street in 1910 and has occupied the space continuously for the past 100 years. The business was originally owned and operated by R.C.H. Wood under the name Roseburg Book Company.

By 1922, ownership had passed to M.J. and S.J. Shoemaker with the name changing to the Roseburg Book Store. Along with books, stationery, and office supplies, the store stocked a full line of Kodak and Eastman films, fishing tackle, baseball goods, sheetmusic, and Lowney's Chocolates.

In 1945, Chester Morgan bought the store. David Morgan took over the operation after his father past away in 1981. Althought current owners, Gary and Janice Quist, who purchased the store from Morgan in 1993, couldn't be happier. Gary is quick to point out that there are many challenges for small businesses as they try to stay competitive and maintain a niche in the community.

Seeking ways to diversify their services and product lines, adding Scrapbooking and creative stamping classes and supplies, offering made to order office furniture.

Even though superstores have entered the Roseburg area, Roseburg Book & Stationery continues to thrive by offering their customers a variety of products with the personal attention only a small town can offer.

The store's slogan has been expanded to "A whole lot more than an office products store, your creative stamping, scrapbooking and Hallmark cards & gift store". Adding to the store's history and home town feeling is veteran employee Vera Wilson, who has been employed by Roseburg Book & Stationery since 1934. Except for one week stint with the Roseburg Armory as a PBX operator, Vera has provided customers with dedicated service "one day at a time" for over 75 years. Vera will be celebrating her 92nd Birthday this February. As a long standing member of the Douglas County Historical Society, she is quick to mention the many changes she has seen since first being hired while attending Roseburg High School. She has worked for three owners, watched as the store tripled in size, and survived not only the blast, but the wave of technology.

Through 100 years, Roseburg Book & Stationery has served Douglas County businesses and individuals. The name has changed and the scope of service has increased dramatically, but there is still the same high quality, personalized service R.C.H. Wood offered his customers when he first opened his doors.

In addition to selling Hallmark cards, gifts, office supplies and commericial office furniture, Roseburg "Scrap" Book & Stationery, (which added the word "Scrap" to their name since they have become the only Scrapbooking and Creative stamping store in Roseburg) is also the place to go when you are downtown and need a snack or something to drink. They have added chips, soft drinks, candy bars, and ice cream, to the many things you will find in the store today.

Today, the 6000 square foot store is still reminiscent of an old fashioned downtown retail store and is the oldest retail store remaining downtown. The store is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm and on Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

The staff at Roseburg "Scrap" Book & Stationery take pride in providing the same high quality, personalized service that the original owner offered customers in 1910.
